MONEY FOR MAGIC!

An UPDATE in PDF | Read the Vet's letter as a PDF | View the X-Rays

Magic is a lovely 6 year-old black and white Appaloosa mare with a willing nature, still a little "green" because of inexperience and little training. Her handsome looks are typical of her breed and she carriers herself well despite her painful condition. That she has suffered so gracefully for so long at such a tender age without any medical attention is a credit to her stamina and constitution.Help us raise the money to fund surgery called pastern arthrodesis to heal Magic's painful condition

She suffers from a severe arthritic condition in her right hind pastern, probably congenital in origin. Our vet, Ashleigh Olds DVM of Aspen Creek Large Animal Clinic in Conifer, has recommended surgery called pastern arthrodesis, fixing the pastern joints together with surgical screws and allowing the bones to fuse. This is Magic's only hope for a pain-free and useful life as a light riding companion once she has been fully rehabilitated. Her chances of complete recovery are very good - 75 to 85 percent! We want to give her that chance and ask your help to allow us to do that for this beautiful Appy mare.

The cost of the surgery is $4,000 to $6,000, with $3,000 earmarked for the initial surgery itself and the remainder for cast changes throughout the bone fusing process. Each cast change requires complete anesthesia and is done about every 12 weeks during recovery. Total recovery takes about a year. She would be here with us receiving the care and attention needed to make her sound again.
